Project Details:
Brushdale were awarded the contract for habitat creation to offset the loss of land claimed by this quarry operator.
- Location : Maidstone and Ashford, Kent
- Project : Creation of six great crested newt ponds and surrounding habitat, 4km of great crested newt fence and pitfalls, pond management and bird netting
Four new ponds were created within a new swathe of habitat, existing ponds were enhanced and hibernacula created. Amphibian fence and traps were supplied and installed with all deadlines met. To allow quarry traffic to continue unimpeded, Brushdale designed and installed an amphibian underpass which also allowed newts to reach an isolated breeding pond.
The return of Sand Martins to nest in an important quarry cliff face was carefully managed with Brushdale supplying and installing a vast quantity of bird netting. This was safely attached to the overhanging quarry cliff face using abseiling and climbing with ropes prior to the return of the birds from their winter migration.
